We’re heading into the final stretch of New York Fashion Week — in just a couple of days we’ll say adieu to mid-day outfit changes and non-stop Uber surge pricing. And while we’re somewhat bittersweet about saying so long to our favorite week, we’re also looking forward to the part where we can look back and reflect.
First up: the hair, the most important part of backstage beauty if you ask us. We got to roll around with the team at Bumble & Bumble and head to the backstage of some of the most coveted shows this season. With tightly groomed braids at Creatures of the Wind, to tousled locks at Tanya Taylor, if these shows are any indicators of trends, then we have some very good hair days ahead of us.
Check us what went down backstage at some of our favorite shows this season, and let Bumble & Bumble show you how to recreate runway ready ‘dos from your own home.
The style: A tough, slightly androgynous girl with two looks: tight, pigtail braids and a slicked, hard side part.
Look 1: Pigtail Braids
How to style: Create a strong center part and prep hair with Dryspun Finish and Thickening Full Form Mousse for tension (no flyaways). Apply Brilliantine on the fingertips for added grip and create a raised cornrow on both sides, starting at the hairline and braiding back behind the ear, securing at the nape with elastic, and finish the braid through the ends (allowing the braid to sit on the shoulders). Apply Thickening Hairspray as needed to keep the braids clean. Finish with Classic Hairspray to calm flyaways.
Look 2: Slicked Side Part
How to style: Prep hair with Thickening Full Form Mousse and apply Thickening Hairspray at the crown. Create a deep-side part at the corner of the brow and blow dry the hair flat, directing roots back and along thehairline. Create a tight ponytail and secure at the nape of the neck with elastic. Cover the ponytail with a hairnet and shape into a bun and secure with hairpins. Finish with Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil for added shine and polish and Classic Hairspray.
The style: Enhanced, natural texture.
How to style: Enhance curls with Bb.Curl, using the Pre-Style/Re-Style Primer, Defining Cremeand Conditioning Mousse. For girls with straighter, finer hair, a lived-in texture was created by spraying hair with Thickening Hairspray and Dryspun Finish.
What to use: Bb.Curl Pre-Style/Re-Style Primer, Bb.Curl Defining Creme and Bb.Curl Conditioning Mousse. For girls with straighter, finer hair, a lived-in texture was created by spraying hair with Thickening Hairspray and Dryspun Finish
The style: Ruffled, slept-in texture. Soft, natural waves with roughed-up ends.
Twist and coil the sections and blow dry thoroughly. Continue to section hair and blow dry throughout. Once all hair is dry, break apart each twisted section with fingertips and apply a small amount of Prêt-à-powder to rough-up and “fray” the twists. Spray Dryspun Finish throughout, making sure to massage a little into the crown to give a slept-in feel. Finish with Does It All Hairspray throughout.
The style: Romanticism with an attitude. Clip-in bangs were razor cut on all the models for uniformity.
How to style: Apply Bb.Gel into hands and pull hair into a high ponytail and secure with elastic, creating a loop in the hair and allowing the rest of the ponytail to fall. For added shine, apply more Bb.Gel. Attach a clip-in bang and dampen with Prep. Each bang was razor cut to personalize the look to each model.
The style: Fast movement with a nod to Blade Runner. Messy finger waves with natural texture in the back.
How to style: Dampen hair with Prep and create a deep side part. Using a comb and Bb.Gel(Lots. Don’t be shy), make a messy finger wave over one eye from the part to the ear and slick behind the ear with more Bb.Gel. Comb hair down at back with a mix of Prep and Thickening Hairspray for hold and air dry.
The style: Utilitarian chic with an air of androgyny.
How to style: Dampen hair with Prep and create a deep side part, tucking behind the ear with pieces left out in front. Spray Thickening Hairspray at the crown and cover with a do-rag to set the hair flat to the head. Models with fine or straight hair received Surf Spray from mid-length to ends for enhanced texture, while thick, dry haired models received Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer to tame. Dry hair all over with a diffuser and remove the do-rag.
The style: Bourgeois braids, center part with braided buns, and individuality.
Look 1: Bourgeois Braids
How to style: Work roots with Surf Spray and rough dry with hands to achieve body and volume. Brush hair back and spray hair with Dryspun Finish for added grit. Create a loose 3-strand outside braid at the back of the head and secure with elastic.
Look 2: Center Part with Braided Buns
How to style: Saturate hair with Prep and Does It All and create a clean center part from the forehead to the back of the head. Slick hair into two low ponytails and secure each at the nape of the neck with elastic. Braid each pony and wrap into a bun and secure with hair pins. Finish with more Does It All.
Look 3: Individuality
How to style: For the third look, models were styled depending on their hair style and various products were used to enhance natural, short and curly hairstyles.
What to use: Varies, Bb.Curl
