Today we’re celebrating World Blood Donor Day with a spotlight on an incredible philanthropist and former supermodel. We here at Taste the Style admire strong courageous women, and supermodel, Niki Taylor, is nothing short of fearless. Niki Taylor once graced the covers of major magazines and billboards and now is here to tell us about her work with the American Red Cross and the Nexcare Give Campaign. After surviving a serious car accident that landed Niki in the ICU for a full month, which involved a number of surgeries and blood donations, Niki owes her life to The American Red Cross. Her experience has changed the model’s outlook on life and she is here to tell us, at Taste the Style, about the importance of blood donations.

Tell us a little about how you got involved in the American Red Cross and Nexcare Give Campaign?

Giving blood is a cause that is very important to me because not only does it help save countless lives each and every day, it’s also what helped save my life years ago when I was in a car accident. I had severe internal injuries, needed over 41 surgeries, and received about 100 units of blood. I will always be grateful to the American Red Cross blood donors who made my recovery possible, and I aim to pay it forward by spreading the word about the critical importance of blood donation.

Since the accident, I’ve worked with the American Red Cross to raise awareness about the ongoing need for blood and platelet donations – you don’t think about it until you need it, but every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.

That’s why I work with the American Red Cross and Nexcare™ Give program year after year to encourage people to roll up a sleeve and give where they live.

Tell us about the Nexcare Give Campaign and how they’re supporting World Blood Donor Day.

The Nexcare™ Give Program is a partnership with Nexcare™ Bandages and the American Red Cross to raise awareness about the need for blood donations and to celebrate all those who give around the world timed to World Blood Donor Day on June 14th.

Through the Nexcare Give program, we aim to increase awareness around a seemingly small act that can make an unbelievable difference. Just one donation can help save the lives of more than one person, and we hope donors will wear their limited edition Nexcare Give bandages they receive when they donate blood or platelets as a badge of honor symbol of the significant impact they made.

After surviving a serious car accident, how has the near-death experience shaped your life on and off the runway?

After my accident, I got a second chance at life.

Actually being able to hug and meet my blood donors face-to-face was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had. For so many years I wondered who rolled up their sleeves for me—what mom, dad, nurse, and student gave me the opportunity to live my life to the fullest. One girl who gave me blood was a senior in high school who donated one time. Another guy goes every three months to donate. The people who helped save me were from a diverse range of backgrounds, spanning in age from 18 to their 60s. Nationwide, approximately 36,000 blood donations are needed each day – we all need superheroes like them.

What are some of the ways people can help with the American Red Cross if they cannot donate blood themselves?

You can always help by pledging your support for blood and platelet donation through the Nexcare Give program at www.nexcaregive.com. You can also celebrate the importance of blood and platelet donation by hosting a virtual blood drive through the American Red Cross SleevesUp program to pledge support – visit https://sleevesup.redcrossblood.org/.  Invite your friends, family, and coworkers to pledge their support for a SleevesUp campaign by making an appointment at a blood drive or donation center convenient for them. You can join my SleevesUp campaign here.

Do you have any advice for others to get involved?

Visit Nexcare Give at www.nexcaregive.com to find a participating blood center, and share your pledge to support blood and platelet donation and personal donation stories on social media using the hashtag #GiveInspires.
