You may have made a number of obligatory resolutions to revel in the whole “new year, new you” spirit. We seek to improve and empower ourselves in a number of ways, so we draw up a list of rules and regulations we intend to abide by to evolve into the best versions of ourselves. We’ll promise to travel more, ditch bad boys, check out more live music, spend less, read more, and, our favorite repeat offender, get fit. We’d be lying if we said this wasn’t a usual suspect in our new year’s resolution picks, but it’s the one we find hardest to keep and commit to. Sure, we’ll join gyms, sign up for ClassPass, and cut out carbs, but it’s only a matter of months until we’re back to our old tricks and bad habits. So sometimes it takes a little more than the fundamental essentials to getting your beach bod on.

What we need is a little support and incentive. And what better place to get it from than your smartphone? We’re virtually glued to them and the fitness world is well aware, which is why it’s pushing out apps to get and keep you motivated. So rather than shell out all those hard earned hundos for a personal trainer and nutritionist, we say give one of these guys a try. You’ll be itty-bitty yellow polka dot bikini ready in no time.

It’s all about the Benjamin’s baby. No, really, it is. What if we told you there was a way for you to actually earn cold hard cash for staying active and watching what you eat? I know, I’d think we were crazy too. Pact uses cash stakes to keep you motivated and maintaining that healthy lifestyle you’ve been telling yourself you’ll get around to. All you have to do is make one of three weekly Pacts (to either stay in shape, eat more veggies, or log meals) with another member while putting some money on the line, which you’ll pay up if you don’t reach your goals (and vice versa). Sync your specific Pact with other apps, like MyFitnessPal, RunKeeper, FitBit, and more, or snap pics of your meals to keep on top of each other. If possibly earning a few bucks each week isn’t an incentive to keep up the good work, then I don’t what is.

Anything coming from this athletic sportswear powerhouse is bound to be as stylish and effective as you’d expect. That’s why we’re kind of obsessed with their free, easy to use app that creates the personal trainer experience without the high cost. Designed to appease your desired results, you can select from a range of goals, including getting lean, strong, toned, or focused. And the intensity of your workouts are based on your level of activity or inactivity (guilty), which ensures you’ll never be pushing yourself past your limits. Take each lesson a la carte or create a four-week program that will keep you committed to your goals. Either way, Nike+ Training Club offers an extensive collection of visual workouts led by Nike Master Trainers and celebrity athletes like Serena Williams (!!!) to guarantee the best-of-the-best steps to success.

The 24-year-old Australian Instagram star has a cult following of 4.4 million and now has her own app (#goals). Sweat with Kayla is a binary and approachable effort of targeted workouts and easy-to-follow recipes, which proves getting in shape isn’t as time consuming and involved as we make it out to be. Workouts, which range from cardio, resistance, and even rest, are a short 28 minutes and include timers, exercise help, and equipment checklists. The app also rids the challenge of daily healthy eating with personalized meal plans to fit your eating preferences (she’s got vegans covered), shopping lists and menus, and even a water tracker to make sure you’re getting enough of that H20. Track your progress with weekly side-by-side photos, which are for your eyes and your eyes only, and stay informed with the education feature that shares facts on everything from food groups to fat loss. Although the app grants you a seven day free trial period, Sweat with Kayla is a subscription based program that requires a bit of commitment considering you’ll be charged a fee if you decide to up and quit your beach body goals.

Sometimes we need a little tough love. Enter CARROT Fit. Let’s start with the fact that their tagline reads “your judgmental fitness overlord.” Sold. When it comes to getting in shape, brutal honesty might just be the key, and CARROT is your sarcastic, no filter AI best friend that’s going to get you into tip top shape sans sugar coating. She’ll threaten, inspire, ridicule and bribe your way into a “Grade A specimen of the human race” through a signature 7 Minutes in Hell workout and compatible HealthKit app that helps count your calories and how many steps you take throughout the day. For $2.99 this hilarious app is a refreshing way to go from chubby human to “what celebrity magazines say you should look like”. Thanks, CARROT.

Just like chronicling your day in a diary, Moves is a fitness companion that maps your daily activity by tallying your steps and counting the calories you’ve burned through it’s sleek and clean timeline. The best part? It does everything for you from your coat pocket or purse. It records your every move, whether it be the walk home from work, cycling on your bike, or a run along the Hudson. You can check out the distance, duration, steps, and calories associated with all of your moves throughout the day too so you know how active you are or how much more you should be.

So you try the apps, but you can’t keep up with cyber instructed circuits, and just like you prefer a hardcover book over a flatscreen Kindle version, you just can’t forgo the real thing. That’s why TroupeFit is the godsend of fitness apps. The Uber of personal training, you schedule and book a one-on-one session with one of their vetted and certified personal trainers anywhere, anytime, whether it be your shoebox apartment in the West Village or Central Park on a beautiful day in the spring. They work with your space and bring all necessary equipment for either a yoga, mat pilates, or general training session, which includes a 45 minute fat burning combo of cardiovascular and strength training methods. Booking a beach vaca with your bestie? Schedule a semi-private session where you and your main squeeze can get in tip top shape together. Either way, you’ll be getting an intimate and figure forming supplement to your ClassPass and gym days.
