It seems like everybody, from GIRLS show runner Jenni Konner to Chris Pratt, has been spotted snapping selfies in sheet masks. There’s nothing chicer than multitasking while getting dewy post-facial skin without leaving your apartment (or, if you’re Chrissy Tiegen, your private jet). We talked with skincare expert and Creative Director at Too Cool For School, Young Kim, about which masks will make us look like we spent the weekend at a spa instead of the Gilded Lily.
What makes sheet masks so different from a DIY avocado concoction? According to Young Kim, “Other skincare products such as toners, serums, and moisturizers may help to improve your skin condition in the long-term, but sheet masks provide quicker results with a relaxing pick-me-up effect and intensive delivery system. When you use a sheet mask for about 20 minutes… your skin will become visibly plump, brightened, and of course deeply hydrated. Frequency of use will improve the long-term benefits, especially if the mask is used to resolve specific skincare concerns such as uneven skin tone, dullness, dryness, or sagging.”
Sheet masks also come with the added bonus of an excuse to actually post one of the twelve selfies you took while watching the latest season of OITNB. So, if you’re in the market to try this Korean beauty trend, here are five sheet masks you need to add to your summer beauty routine STAT.
Tonymoly masks exemplify all there is to love about Korean skincare — adorable packaging, an affordable price point, and noticable results. The full line of Tonymoly’s I’m Real masks are available at their downtown location, and some Urban Outfitters locations. Pick up a pomegranate mask to boost your skin’s elasticity, or use a rice mask for its clarifying properties.
Want to feel like you’re getting ready for the Met Ball? Treat yourself to the AmorePacific Moisture Bound Intensive Serum Mask. This luxe mask is infused with bamboo sap and AmorePacific’s signature 5-Hydra Complex, and it’s paraben, sulfate, and phthalate-free. The soft cloth mask locks in moisture more effectively than thinner sheets, and soothes the face as it hydrates.
For a mask that will deeply moisturize and clarify skin, try one of Too Cool For School’s Egg Cream Masks . The hypoallergenic masks are infused with egg white and yolk extracts that moisturize and remove dead skin cells. Choose from masks designed to hydrate, tighten pores, or firm skin. The hydration mask is formulated with coconut water, while the Pore Tightening mask includes vinegar extract to clarify pores, and witch hazel to minimize their size. All of Too Cool For School’s products are paraben, sulfate, and phthalate-free.
If you have combination skin, Kocostar slice sheet masks might be just what you’re looking for. Kocostar masks come in “slices” of their title ingredient (rose, cucumber, tomato, or lemon), so you can mix and match slices depending on what needs to be addressed in different areas.
It’s Skin’s The Fresh Sheet Mask lives up to its name — it’s a perfect pick-me-up for dull or dry skin. Pick avocado to revitalize dry skin, carrot to brighten, or (our favorite) honey to improve elasticity and radiance. Its skin masks are a little lighter than those designed for maximum hydration, so they’re an excellent choice if your skin is oily.
