As New Yorkers, we unapologetically have a lot to complain about. Whether it’s about our rent, how long our commute is, or how fickle the weather can be, we tend to glorify the notion that complaining is our right. But sometimes, we need to take a break from the hustle and bustle that this little island has to offer and just chill the eff out by hanging out with our besties, eating takeout, and watching horribly made movies.
So, of course, it made sense that we connected with Postmates and three hungry Boss Babes who wanted to get away from the summer heat and enjoy a cool-kid-approved slumber party that their younger selves would’ve been jealous of. Plus, in between ordering on Postmates and braiding each others’ hair, we asked them very important questions about food — because, would it be a Taste The Style story if we didn’t? What are you usually in the mood to eat when you are staying in?
Shelby: Definitely more on the comfort-food end of the spectrum when it comes to ordering in. Sushi is a favorite, and there are so many good spots in NYC to choose from! Occasionally, if I’m feeling super lazy but also healthy, I’ll have a smoothie or Acai bowl delivered. (I know, what has NY done to me!?!) If my mum read this she would tell me that it’s absolutely ridiculous to have such a thing like a smoothie delivered, haha.
Hélène: Since I’m a huge foodie and love essentially every single type of cuisine, it varies a lot! But my usual default is something involving noodle soup and dumplings. Yum.
Tesa: Sushi! There’s this amazing place in my neighborhood that has the best nigiri sushi (they call them bombs). It’s the perfect (healthy) dinner option for a night in.
What’s your go-to food when you’ve got some serious cravings?
Shelby: Ohhhh, many things. Very oddly, I’ve been hung up majorly on dried mangos lately. They’re like candy, but not. And less odd, I’m always down for a dope pizza!
Hélène: My cravings range from über healthy to mega carb-y, so it’s either a big fresh salad with a piece of fish (yes, I’m a weird creature who actually craves salads), pizza, or noodles and dumplings.
Tesa: I have serious cravings all the time haha. It can range from ice cream and tacos to avo toast and huge fresh salads.
What is your food and health philosophy? How does it factor into your life?
Shelby: Balance and water! I try to keep my diet all about a healthy balance between the good and the bad. Of course, I have the occasional day where I go all out for every meal (NYC will do that to you!), but overall I try to balance out that matcha soft serve ice cream or pizza with a salad or juice for my next meal. Regardless of what I’m eating and when, I always try to keep water at hand! I feel so much healthier when I drink a proper amount of water and really notice a huge difference in my energy and skin when I don’t.
Hélène: For me, it’s all about lifestyle. As mentioned above, I feel lucky that I actually naturally gravitate towards healthy foods, so for me, it’s not that difficult to eat well. My weakness lies in my love of carbs and french fries. I think having a healthy relationship with food is key and for me, that transpires into an everything-in-moderation philosophy. I’m also a big believer in being in tune with your body. I’ve realized that not everyone responds to the same foods in the same way, and my nutrition habits are based on what feels right for my system. Figuring that out has been a total game-changer, especially as I got older. Pairing healthy eating habits with a regular exercise regime is as boring, yet as real as it gets.
Tesa: Ugh, my schedule is so crazy at the moment that I don’t have time to cook anymore. Eating healthy can be a challenge when you’re always surrounded by dollar pizza… But! that’s why delivery is so helpful! My philosophy is that with a healthy body comes a healthy mind, as well as productivity (read: more energy) so I always try my best to keep a good balance between that pizza and actual nutrients haha.
What is your favorite food memory?
Shelby: This one was easy. One of my favorite, and first, food memories: I was in second grade and my friend, Kaitlyn, made a joke at lunch. Apparently, it was so funny that I couldn’t help but laugh to the point where I accidentally spit my chocolate milk out all over my second grade crush who was sitting right in front of me. Andddddd that’s how you win the boys, ladies!
Hélène: All my memories around Christmastime are centered around food and anchored in family and tradition. I always anticipate that time of year for those very reasons.
Tesa: My favorite food memories are definitely tied to LA when I lived there for a bit. That’s where I became a true foodie AND tried the best tacos of my life. I got them from a random truck in a Rite Aid parking lot… that blew my mind.
Who is your dream dinner date?
Shelby: John Hamm (so much love for Don Draper) or Eddie Redmayne (that Les Miserables solo….I die).
Hélène: My husband. Is that cheesy? Oh well.
Tesa: My dream dinner date would be going out with my closest girlfriends for pasta and sangria! I can’t think of anything better than that to be honest!
