How to Prep Your Closet for Fashion Week

Fashion week is to some as Halloween is to the cast of Mean Girls: it’s the one time of year when you can wear your most fashion pieces and nobody can say anything about it. Last year, during London fashion week, I piled as many clashing designer items as I could on my person and crashed a bunch of parties. It was great. I probably would have been more successful if I’d added a headdress into the mix, because absurd, theatrical looks seem to be what stands out most after years of collections featuring recycled ideas. But whether you want to blend in with droves of bloggers in 305’s or shuffle around in a Margiela-eque statement that limits your range of motion, here’s where to find pieces perfect for leaping through crosswalks when there’s a DSLR nearby. If all else fails, you can duct tape some Bic lighters to your sneakers and call it Vetements.

Pharrel did it, so what’s stopping you? Anything remotely interesting on your head is a surefire way to capture attention. Just ask the guy with the cat on his head who wanders around St. Mark’s. Downsides of a hat include: having to carry it, getting it caught on things, and hat hair. Our pick? An updated newsboy cap, because being the girl who says “sorry, Miranda” and exits the elevator is back.

It’s still hot out. It’s okay to dress for the season outside instead of the one being shown inside (although it’s usually freezing in there). We’d go for a lightweight gown or leather pinafore — you can still stay cool while being polished enough to spend a day in these without changing for nighttime events.

If hats don’t work for you, carry another conversation-starting item. Picnic baskets were the unexpected accessory of this summer, so perhaps small dogs will return for fall. Joking aside, backpacks, sunglasses, and statement jewelry isn’t going anywhere, so here are some fresh picks to perk up any ensemble.

The easiest way to make an outfit interesting or channel Penny Lane is to throw on a coat with texture, fur, embellishment, or good tailoring. Materials that are tacky or cumbersome in other cuts shine in jackets. If you don’t want to break a sweat, consider a soft trench or robe-like piece.

Chances are, you’ll be running around for the next two weeks. Do us a favor and skip the Stan Smiths. If you have larger feet, consider the guys’ section for more variety and more frequent drops. If not, opt for one of these pairs to stand out from the crowd in comfort.
