Fall: the most anticipated season for us devout fashion buffs. We all look forward to the unveiling of the latest rendition of the coat, the knit, and of course, the star shoe. We track and follow the reverberating trends interpreted on runways from New York to Paris, and this season we have all the latest locked down and ready to go. And as all of the autumn wear starts to seep into stores, we can’t help but anticipate the moment the first leaf turns and the sweltering heat dissipates.
For those of you who literally can’t wait to wear what’s in vogue for this upcoming season (I know I can’t), here’s how to wear five fall trends while summer slowly concludes.
These shoes were made for walking. Literally. Ditch sky-high stilettos that induce gut wrenching anxiety with each and every step because the more sensible short, stacked heel is here. Chanel, Maison Margiela, COMMES des GARÇON, and many more ventured to pioneer comfort as cool and we’ve joined the movement. Make short and sweet sexy and take these pretty things for a night out. You’ll create serious shoe envy to everyone you out-dance. Your feet will thank you.
Insert obligatory 50 Shades of Gray comment here. But seriously, it’s easy to delude ourselves into thinking that the cult craze had some sort of influence on designers this fall given that Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, and Giorgio Armani fashioned gray as the it color for women’s suiting. Wear this sophisticated, monochromatic ensemble to work as a subtle nod to your binary ability for style and smarts. A fitted tee with slim cropped pants (and matching blazer, of course) are warm weather ways to nail this trend.
Peace, love and 70’s. Designers like Chloe, Etro, and Lanvin paid homage to the bohemian babe, reviving iconic fashions from our favorite era: far out flares, ethereal gowns, and eclectic prints. Allude to this much missed decade before fall makes way with a printed gauzy blouse tucked into cropped high-waisted flares. Slip on platform wedges and perfectly rounded sunnies for a more literal take. Groovy, baby.
Goth girls unite! Alexander Wang, Givenchy, and Yohji Yamamoto lure us to the dark side with badass ensembles and edgy details. Although the thought of all black in scorching summer heat is inherently unsound, this slimming shade is the cool girl’s uniform to start sporting now. Mix luxe materials, such as suede and leather, with intricate detailing for a fresh approach on a generic hue. Elevate the look with some 80’s subculture add-ons: try a septum cuff or a deep, dark shade for the lips.
Plaid may be reminiscent of school girl prep, but designers took a fresh take on the pattern this season. Punk or bourgeoise, no matter the reference Chanel, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Creatures of the Wind, and so on translated the tartan print onto coats, pants, shirts, skirts and more. Be a prophetic vision and take this fall trend to an unexpected destination: the beach. Pair a plaid print bikini with all other fun in the sun essentials for a summery start on the upcoming season’s mega trends.
