WTF Is a Serum?! And Why Do You Need One?

By now, you’ve probably heard of the Korean 10-step beauty care regimen that some people SWEAR by. But, my philosophy when it comes to my beauty routine is to keep it simple. Many of us out there think that the more product we put on our face, the better. This isn’t always the case. Putting on too many products can overwhelm your skin and cause you to break out or even have a reaction.

We all know the staples of face care: cleanser, a toner (if you feel so inclined), and a moisturizer. But in the past year, many brands have been coming out with serums that promise a whole slew of skincare benefits. What is a serum? And why the f*** do you need to buy another product?

Serums emerged from the Korean beauty market and have slowly made their way over to the U.S. I mean seriously, what products aren’t inspired by K-beauty?! Serums are very lightweight and actually penetrate the barrier of your skin way more effectively than your moisturizer does. It is packed with only the most useful ingredients and is highly concentrated, which is why serums are so effective. A serum can be used to substitute your moisturizer if you have oily skin, or used in addition to your moisturizer for extra dewy-ness. A serum should be used after you cleanse and tone your face. If you don’t use a toner, don’t worry, just apply the serum to your bare face after cleansing.

Now that you know a little more about WTF a serum is, you may be thinking, which one is right for me? Being a skincare junky, I’ve basically done all of the work for you. Scroll down to see some of the best serums for different skin types.
